She doesn’t seem very inclined to let him do anything overtly useful. Cassandra delegates tasks and gives Eugene dish duty, which annoys him. Just as Eugene and Cassandra convince her to give it another shot the next day, the rain sets in. She feels like she’s drawing herself too stiffly. Lance is making dinner while Cassandra criticizes the herbs Hook Foot picked for the stew, cautioning everyone that they might be poisonous (they were wild chives), and Rapunzel is trying to add herself to the portrait she drew earlier, but she can’t seem to get it right. With the wheel fixed, they get back on the road to their first destination for the night, Deep Canyon. Cass manages to fix the wheel using Eugene’s book as leverage to set the coupling straight, but won’t give him credit for giving her the idea in the first place (not to use his book, specifically, but to get a couple inches of leverage in order to make the peg fit back in the hole). Things are all the more urgent for her because Owl informs her that bad weather is coming. She won’t even listen to his advice and expertise as someone who spent the majority of his life living on the road. Cassandra wants to fix it herself and won’t accept help from Eugene or anyone else for that matter. But the story is interrupted by one of the caravan wheels coming loose. We also learn of the phrase, ‘ The journey makes me stronger, braver, truer,’ which is something Eugene both loves and has tried to live by. It’s revealed that the book’s author is just called The Author, intended to add mystery to the writings. On the road, Eugene is reading from The Tales of Flynnigan Rider to everyone while they travel. She’s taking her job very seriously as Rapunzel’s protector, to the point where she’s not particularly inclined to let Rapunzel do anything, despite the fact that she wants to help. Cassandra wants everyone to hurry along, because she’s planned the itinerary for the trip and doesn’t want to take too many side trips or delays. Rapunzel is in the process of drawing a group picture of everyone, because the light is perfect, and she intends to add herself later. Our story begins the evening that the intrepid group has left Corona. (After all, the book’s been out for over a year.) Here comes the read more, but now it’s more for length than it is because I’m trying to avoid spoilers. Why yes! I absolutely have finally written a summary of Vanishing Village, a full year after it was released!Īs with Lost Lagoon, this book has three parts, thirty-seven chapters (instead of the thirty-eight that Lost Lagoon has), and each chapter skips between points of view: Rapunzel, Cassandra, and now, Eugene as well!
